In Memory of a Slain Surfer

In La Jolla yesterday, a crowd of more than 300 surfers paddled out to pay tribute to one of our own. In the middle of the ceremonial circle, Emery's mother stood on a boat, casting out her son's ashes upon the water. Emery's Left is the newly renamed La Jolla Windansea surf spot, which was Emery's favorite place to surf. "Emery's Left" has a dual meaning. The pro surfer was goofy footed which meant that he would head down the face of a wave facing left. He died 4 days after having his head fractured in multiple places, on Memorial Day. The four La Jolla High School graduates charged with the murder of Emery still remain in jail, except Yanke, who posted a 1 million dollar bail. The other boys bails are set a 1.2 million and 2 million dollar. It is a tragedy that we lost one of our own and especially over nothing. This hopefully won't happen again.

Save Trestles Benefit Concert Info

Located three miles south of San Clemente, off Interstate 5, is the San Onofre State Park and the world famous surf spot, Trestles. San Onofre State Park was established in 1971 by Governor Ronald Regan. In establishing San Onofre, Governor Regan said, “one of the greatest legacies we can leave to the future generation is the heritage of our land… But unless we can preserve and protect the unspoiled areas which God has given us, we will have nothing to leave them.” Over the years since, San Onofre has become one of the five most-visited state parks in California.
What is happening to San Onofre State Park and the San Mateo campgrounds is the southern expansion of CA-241, Foothill-South. The plan is to expand the toll road and have it meet at the San Diego County line near San Onofre. The road would split directly through the San Mateo watershed which is home to seven federally endangered and threatened species. Tragically, it would also result in the permanent loss of a significant portion of San Onofre State Park and the Donna O‘Neil Land Conservancy which are irreplaceable. This is not the legacy that should be left for future generations.
Response to the Save Trestles Benefit Concert has been overwhelming. Musicians, artists and surfboard shapers from throughout the country have committed to donate their time and talent. Currently 6 bands, donations of autographed surfboards, surf art and donated services guarantee this event will be outstanding. Originally planned as a smaller event on the beach at Trestles, the Save Trestles Benefit Concert will be on August 12, 2007 at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheater (3200 occupancy)

The Sunday afternoon, (alcohol free and family friendly) event will be held next to the historic Oceanside Pier in one of the most unique ocean front venues located just feet away from the sandy beach. A modest donation will be requested at the gate. The first band will begin around 12:30 p.m. with the last band finale finishing up around 6:00 p.m.. Items will be auctioned during the event including surfboards and other forms of surf art and musical memorabilia.
Unfortunately, even though the very talented artists and the organizers are donating 100% of their time and expenses there are costs attached to an event of this size. Underwriting and donation are being sought for the costs associated with mandated security, fencing, portable restrooms, traffic, safety personnel, and similar expenses. The event will be promoted and advertised throughout the county. It will be covered by national surf magazines, Surfrider Foundation world wide and print press. Promotion and advertising will commence on June 19th, 2007.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Your support of the first annual Save Trestles Benefit Concert is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions please contact Tyler Wood at (619) 293-3379 or email him at tyler@mfcsurf.com

Write your Congressman or Woman!!!

Dear [insert either: Congresswoman Davis, Congressman Bilbray or the SD City Council member of your choice]

Please lend your name to protecting San Diego County’s San Onofre State Park from the Toll Road proposed by Orange County. Our parks are not merely reserves until someone wants to develop them. There is hardly any support here in San Diego for the Toll Road: A 2006 Fairbank poll showed 84% of San Diegans do not want Toll Roads built in our state parks.

Who would anyone want to camp, hike, surf or study nature with a polluting, noisy six-lane pay-to-drive Toll Road nearby? The EIR prepared by Orange County’s agency (created solely for the purpose of building Toll Roads) disclosed that almost 400 acres of habitat would be lost forever. The Toll Road will pollute the now-pristine waters of San Mateo Creek, which drains to the famed Trestles surfing beach.

Thousands of cubic meters of soil will be moved, pile drivers will be pounding day and night for the four+ years of construction while I-5 lanes are closed.

Who benefits from the Toll Road? Not I-5 users: a “no compete” clause restricts traffic improvements on the freeway if the Toll Road is built. The tolls on the Toll Road may exceed $300 per month. But Orange County developers who have multi-million dollar homes on the market support the semi-private Toll road.

I support protection of our state parks for the enjoyment of students on field trips, traveling families who cannot afford hotels, surfers who revere Trestles, hikers who want a bit of quietude, and even to retain a hint of the nature that was once common in Southern California. There are not a lot of camping sites on the Southern California coast, and losing the San Mateo campground due to its proximity to the Toll Road would be a shame.

Please do not remain silent on this controversy. Join the Sierra Club, Surfrider Foundation, San Diego Audubon, the League of Conservation Voters San Diego and many other elected officials here in opposing this selected route for the Toll Road.

San Onofre is the 5th most popular state park, and attracts millions of visitors each year. Will you help us protect it, or allow Orange County to develop our county as well as its own?
